Magnetic Island ... A short break.

24 July 2014

When your special-trusted-school-friend turns 60 AND she decides to celebrate on her favourite island AND that happens to be in North Queensland, thousands of kilometres north AND many degrees warmer than winter at home, you have to go. It's a definite. Magnetic Island, Maggie to those who love her, here we come.

Not your average tropical island, Magnetic has a granite heart and sits in the dry tropics. She's special, very special.

Giant boulders tumble to the shore line. Trees survive in what seem the most impossible spots.

A perfect habitat for Allied Rock Wallabies whose cute little faces pop out from darkened crevices.

Coloured for camouflage.

This one, tongue extended in disdain, obviously not happy about having his photo taken.

Others live on the breakwater at the marina, with views to Australia, the mainland, Townsville, in the distance, a 20 minute ferry ride away.

Perfect.

Paradise Found.

At night, possums appear in the trees.

Curlews are everywhere. Their screeching cries eerie in the darkness.

Now you see me.

Now you don't. Almost.

Iridescent blue winged kookaburras visit in hope of food.

Our little piece of Paradise Found is very salubrious.

Close to the important amenities.

And within walking distance of the marina.

Spotted Eagle Rays feed on the marina's rocky edge.

The beach is just for us to explore.

This lonely sting ray has been caught in a creek and must wait for the next high tide for his release.

Fibro holiday shacks nestle beyond the coconut palms.

Some dangerously ladened with fruit.

Colour abounds.

Who wouldn't want to live here, perched high on the rocks looking out over the Coral Sea?

Magnetic Island truly is Paradise Found.

She could be thousands of miles from anywhere but she's within sight of the mainland.

Some crazy people even swim the divide.

Others race in Outrigger canoes.

She's truly Paradise Found. Don't you think?

Know any other hidden treasures that I need to visit?

Where is your Paradise Found?

Oh, and because it was a birthday celebration, there was a lot of this happening.

Don't you just love the little thong coaster made by my craft-crazy-Townsville friend? Best thing, it stays on your glass wherever you go. Coaster and glass identifier in one. Perfect.
